I have never been stuck unable to print with other inks, but I can tell you about the difference in quality because I have ran two other "generic" brands through my printer. One of those brands is a major name in the non-genuine inks, but I will leave their name off this review because I found similar results with the other generic ink. The generic brand inks all fed just fine through the printer, but in general it is MUCH easier to mistakenly put these inks in the wrong slot. May seem like a minor deal because the colors are obvious, but I once accidentally dropped one and it fell in the wrong slot. It was a real pain to dig it back out. With Xerox inks the shapes are much better designed to only fit in the correct slot. Then there is the print quality. For most colors, it's "decent", not exceptional with the generics. Maybe... Needless to say, it did not work. The printer did not recognize the presence of the ink and said that it was still out of ink (the off-brand inks are not the same shape as the Xerox brand inks). After carefully extracting the off-brand ink from the printer and putting in the Xerox brand, I was back in business.I know the Xerox inks cost more, but they actually work. The company I purchased the off-brand inks from wouldn't take the return either, so learn from my mistake and just buy the Xerox brand.
